This course advances the spoken knowledge of the (Fantse) Twi dialect of Akan language beyond the introductory level with emphasis on “communicative teaching methodology” resulting in attaining an intermediate level proficiency of the dialect. By the end of the course, students should be able to read and write as beginners of the Akan (Fantse) dialect.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, Learners will:
1. Acquire the major skills (4) in language learning: comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. Prominence will be given to comprehension and speaking at the beginning level.
2. Expand their understanding of the culture and customs of the Akan (Fantse) people as expressed in the language and compare it with their own.
3. Grasp the basic structures of the Language as beginners.
4. Demonstrate their knowledge of the Akan (Fantse) language through written tests and presentations.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

The communicative approach to language teaching and learning will be used. This method will include simulations, role plays, model dialogues and monologues, audio /video resources, language games. Songs, short poems, or rhymes relevant to the lesson will be taught by the instructor to induce and sustain learner motivation and interest. They will also serve to emphasize or reinforce grammar forms and cultural notes. The classroom environment will be very interactive.

Students are strongly encouraged to be creative, participate, and initiate conversations. There will be special “conversation hours” to complement the classroom language learning experience. Conversation hours could take such forms as “Akan movie viewing,” storytelling, interaction with native speakers, or simply enjoying lunch and “conversing” with native speakers. Attendance is compulsory and part of the oral project score. Students and teacher(s) will confer and decide on suitable dates and times.
