LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learners will advance in the four major skills in language learning: comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. Prominence will be given to comprehension and speaking at the beginning level.
Learners will continue to expand their understanding of the culture and customs of the Akan people as expressed in the language and compare it with their own.
Learners will advance their grasp of the basic structures of the Language as beginners.
Learners will continue to demonstrate their knowledge of the Asante Twi dialect of the Akan language through written tests and presentation.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
The communicative approach to language teaching and learning will be used. This will include simulations, role plays, model dialogues and monologues, audio /video resources, language games. Songs, short poems or rhymes relevant to the lesson will be taught by instructor to induce and sustain learner motivation and interest. They will also serve to emphasize or reinforce grammar forms and cultural notes. The classroom environment will be very interactive.
Learners are strongly encouraged to be creative, and initiate conversations. There will be special “conversation hours” to complement the classroom language learning experience. Conversation hours could take such forms as “Akan movie viewing,” interaction with native speakers, or simply enjoying lunch and “conversing” with native speakers. Attendance is compulsory and part of the oral project score. Students and teacher will confer and decide on suitable dates and times.
